Let’s face it, we all know someone struggling with their mental health!
When the statistics say that 1 in 5 people will experience a problem with their mental health in any given year, the chances are that you know someone that could use help! The bigger problem is they may not know how to tell you or others about it or how to ask for help. When we are open to mental health needs, we all can make a difference in the lives of those around us who suffer. You might ask yourself “How can I make a difference in Mental Health?” and it is as simple as starting a conversation and considering a few of the following ways to promote mental health and wellness on a daily basis.
Here are six easy ways that anyone can choose to make a difference in mental health!
- Share your support online – through social media you can share about your own experiences, or repost educational articles or blogs on mental health.
- Volunteer at local and statewide agencies – National Alliance on Mental Illness NAMI, CrossWinds Counseling & Wellness, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Court Appointed Special Advocates CASA, or other agencies in your area.
- Educate yourself – Attend a Mental Health First Aid course, read books and articles on brain health (check out Dr. Tina Payne Bryson’s new book “The Yes Brain”), connect with your local mental health agencies and inquire about what they do and what they offer.
- Make a financial contribution – Mental health agencies, much like hospitals, take anyone regardless of their ability to pay but providing mental health care is far from free. Consider financially helping out the agencies that help our brains! Here’s our donate link, if you’re interested!
- Practice mental wellness – Focus on your own self-care, find something you truly enjoy, do something that is good for your own health like taking a walk and then ask your friends to join in!
- Start a conversation with others in need – “how are you doing?”, be a good listener, find out how they like to relax, ask them to coffee or just to chat. It’s time to start the conversation with those that you care about!
When we support those around us who struggle with difficult feelings or thoughts, it can only make a community have a healthy stigma free mindset of mental wellness. Practicing wellness daily by knowing what resources are readily available are key to making a difference – and something all of us can do!
It’s up to each one of us to respond to mental health and wellness needs! Our actions can influence others and make a positive difference in the lives of those around us.
